How to Make Disciples: Practical Steps for Everyday Life

A single wooden domino toppled over and a series of several other dominos cascading behind it

When Jesus gave the Great Commission, He didn’t reserve it for pastors, missionaries, or church leaders. He gave it to everyday followers.

Matthew 28:19–20“ - Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

Making disciples is not about having all the answers or a perfect faith story. It’s about walking with others as we follow Jesus together. Discipleship is less about programs and more about relationships shaped by truth, love, and consistency.

God invites each of us to participate in this mission—not someday, but right where we are.

Discipleship Starts with Following Jesus Personally

Before we make disciples, we must first be disciples.

Luke 9:23“ - If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Discipleship flows out of a real, growing relationship with Christ. When our lives are shaped by prayer, Scripture, repentance, and obedience, we naturally begin to influence others. People are far more impacted by what we live than by what we say.

Practical step: Ask yourself regularly, “How is Jesus shaping my decisions, attitudes, and relationships?”

Make Disciples Through Relationships, Not Pressure

Jesus didn’t rush people into transformation. He walked with them.

Mark 3:14 - “He appointed twelve… so that they might be with him.”

Discipleship begins with presence. It looks like shared meals, honest conversations, showing up consistently, and listening well. Inviting someone into your life often opens the door to inviting them into faith.

Practical step: Invite someone to coffee, lunch, or a walk. Be intentional about building trust before trying to teach.

Teach by Modeling, Not Just Explaining

Jesus didn’t only teach truth—He lived it in front of His disciples.

1 Corinthians 11:1 - “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”

Discipleship is caught as much as it is taught. When others see how you pray, forgive, serve, repent, and trust God in difficulty, faith becomes tangible and attainable.

Practical step: Let others see your faith in action—pray out loud, share Scripture naturally, and be honest about your struggles and growth.

Keep It Simple and Scripture-Centered

Discipleship doesn’t require deep theological training. It requires faithfulness.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 - “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching… that the man of God may be complete.”

Walking through Scripture together—reading, discussing, and applying it—is one of the most powerful discipleship tools. God’s Word does the transforming work.

Practical step: Read a short passage together weekly. Ask: What does this teach us about God? How should we live differently?

Discipleship Is Reproducible

Jesus didn’t just call disciples—He trained them to make disciples.

2 Timothy 2:2 - “What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.”

Healthy discipleship multiplies. The goal isn’t dependency, but empowerment—helping others follow Jesus and eventually walk alongside someone else.

Practical step: Encourage the person you’re discipling to pray about who they could invest in next.

Rely on the Holy Spirit, Not Perfection

Many believers hesitate to disciple others because they feel unqualified. But Jesus never asked for perfection—He promised power.

Acts 1:8 - “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you… and you will be my witnesses.”

Discipleship is not about having everything figured out. It’s about being faithful and trusting the Spirit to do the work only He can do.

Faithful Presence Changes Lives

Discipleship doesn’t require a stage, a title, or a microphone. It requires obedience, availability, and love. When we walk closely with Jesus and invite others to do the same, God uses ordinary faithfulness to produce extraordinary fruit.

A Prayer for Disciple-Makers

Jesus, thank You for calling us to follow You. Teach us how to walk closely with You and courageously invite others along the journey. Help us love people well, speak truth humbly, and trust the Holy Spirit to bring growth. Amen.
