The Power of Words
Have you ever noticed how certain words can change everything? A single phrase can inspire hope, cut to the heart, or call us higher. The Bible reminds us that “if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ” (Hebrews 3:14, NLT). Those words matter. They remind us that following Jesus isn’t a temporary sprint—it’s a lifelong race of faithfulness.
The Danger of Pride
When we first encounter God, everything feels new. Our passion is fresh, our hearts are eager, and our spirits are lifted. But over time, that “new” can fade if we aren’t careful. Just like a favorite pair of sneakers that eventually lose their shine, our spiritual lives can grow worn if we stop tending to them. The call of Jesus is to keep going—to remain faithful until the very end.
One of the greatest obstacles to that endurance is pride. Pride whispers that we can manage life on our own, that we don’t really need God to lead. Yet Jesus is clear: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Pride tells us to stay in control, but discipleship calls us to surrender.
Living with Humility and Purpose
So how do we fight pride? We practice humility. We cultivate gratitude. We take our eyes off ourselves and place them on God and others. As we do, we begin to experience what some might call “modern-day miracles”—moments when we see God moving powerfully in people’s lives, transforming hearts, restoring relationships, and building faith.
But the life of a disciple doesn’t stop with avoiding pride; it pushes us toward purpose. Jesus gave His followers a mission that still stands today: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20). This isn’t just a suggestion. It’s the heartbeat of our calling.
Where Are You Today?
The truth is, living on mission requires sacrifice. It may mean less time chasing hobbies, rearranging our priorities, or stepping outside of our comfort zones. But when we invest in God’s mission, we gain far more than we give up. We gain a life of meaning, relationships that sharpen us, and the joy of watching God transform lives.
So where are you today? Are you in the stands, watching others live out their faith? Are you on the sidelines, with your heart in it but not fully engaged? Or are you in the game, running the race and making disciples? The invitation is open. Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, to stay faithful, and to join Him on the mission that matters most.
Let’s be a people who remain vigilant, who resist pride, and who stay on mission. Because words truly matter—and the words of Jesus give us life.
